Job Summary

Reporting to the production manager, the CNC machinist is responsible for setting up and operating various machine tools and numerically controlled tooling to perform precision machining operations. The CNC machinist machines parts of simple to intermediate complexity, modifies programs, and performs their own setups. 

Skills and qualifications sought

  • Diploma of Vocational Studies in Machining Technology OR Diploma of College Studies in Mechanical Engineering;

  • A professional specialization certificate (ASP) in digital control is an asset;

  • Ability to read technical plans and specifications; 

  • Good command of measuring instruments (e.g. micrometers, verniers, etc.);

  • Strong team spirit;

  • To show initiative;

  • To demonstrate accuracy and precision;

  • Knowledge of basic concepts in manual programming (trigonometry) is an asset. 

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Read and interpret plans, graphs and tables;

  • Perform pre-machining checks to ensure that the necessary elements are available: tools, templates, program, required materials, etc.;

  • Perform the adjustments (“set-up”), calculate the dimensions and tolerances, measure and arrange the elements to be machined;

  • Take the original coordinates and start the program, performing the necessary checks;

  • Check the initial pieces and calculate the measurements before forwarding them to the inspection department for approval;

  • Make any necessary corrections to the parts following inspection, and start production;

  • To set up and operate machine tools, as well as numerically controlled tooling;

  • Adjust, as needed, and set up machine tools for machine tool operators;

  • Check the dimensions of machined parts and tooling using micrometers, verniers, gauges, height gauges, optical comparators and other specialized measuring devices and equipment, then complete and write the related inspection reports;

  • Note any dimensional deviations of the parts from the specifications and tolerances, and notify the team leader;

  • Provide the necessary technical assistance to operators during adjustments in order to produce parts that conform to customer requirements;

  • Participate in the training and integration of newly hired employees into their positions;

  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts and ensure that working methods and procedures within the department are always improved.

Conditions

  • Salary: Between $27.74 and $37.62 per hour, depending on the experience and skills of the successful candidate;

  • Workplace: Valleyfield Centre of Excellence; 

  • Work schedule: Rotating shift (day/evening and night, 72 hours worked per pay period, paid for 80 hours);
